NC State Food Science Club + NCFIL Make a Sweet Team
NCFIL Pilot Plant Manager Joseph Hildebrand was recently featured in the article, “Peppermint Partnership: N.C. State’s Food Science Club Manufactures Ice Cream Toppings at Research Campus”in the Salisbury Post. This article focuses on how the N.C. State Food Science Club partnered with NCFIL to create nine ice cream toppings for the club’s fundraiser.
From Chocolate Sauce to Cherry Compote
Without usual revenue from scooping Howling Cow Ice Cream at the N.C. State Fair, Food Science Club students decided to create their own line of ice cream toppings and manufactured all products at NCFIL, with the support of Hildebrand and Executive Director Dr. Bill Aimutis. The article highlights the flexibility of the NCFIL staff and its facilities. Staff were excited to help bring the students’ classroom learning to life in the lab.
From testing recipes to reviewing food safety to designing labels, the entire production was student-led.
